Skate Wizards

This was once a paradise Opulent and civilized Where people prospered neath the sunny skies Then one day through a twist of fate Invaders came to devastate Resistance was too little and too late Skate Wizards in your peaceful aerie Roll on down and ride again once more Skate Wizards leave your sanctuary Save a world that's rotting to the core Hear them coming down the trail See them sliding down a rail Catching air like birds upon a gale Skate Wizards can you see the future In the haze of the sacred smoke Skate wizards will there be destruction Do your eyes see a ray of hope Toking on a halfpipe Dropping in and tuning out 720 mid-flight Isn’t this what it’s all about Just another pump and off I go I’ll be rolling where the wind may blow Skate Wizards in the stone grave valley Stealing life from the jaws of death Skate wizards in the stone grave valley Finding magic in whatever’s left

Under the mountain Where the living rock is hewn Far under the mountain Rings a deep and lonely tune Who among us will be revealed Who among us is fit to wield Forged in the furnace Where the gods lit the first flame Made by the maker For the ones who praise his name One who was born to take command The one who is fit to take in hand The bane of the goblin hordes Our standard forever more That settled a thousand scores The Axe of the Dwarvish Lords Born under the mountain You lived a life that few have known For gods, gold and clan And now you seek to mount the throne You may be wise, you may be bold But is your grip able to hold The bane of the goblin hordes Our standard forever more That settled a thousand scores The Axe of the Dwarvish Lords

In the coming days If you’re far from home Out on your own in a world out to get you Though you might be dazed You won’t be overthrown If you remember the what we have bestowed you Horn of Valhalla Breath from your lips Play a song on the wind And a legion will stand beside you If you find that you have strayed Beyond the world you’ve known Undone and outnumbered by what lies before you Horn of Valhalla Breath from your lips Play a song on the wind And a legion will stand beside you Horn of Valhalla Breath from your lips Play a song on the wind And a legion will stand beside you A legion will stand beside you A legion will stand beside you

I’m a wizard on wheels Dropping into the valley Into places unreal Waiting on the finale The things I’ve seen could make you cry The wreckage of a world gone by But it’s nothing to fear For a Wizard on Wheels A little touch of the weird I’m at home with the strange Like the wind in my beard Like the seasons that change I ride between the dark and light When I’m on deck you’ll be alright Am I making it clear I’m a Wizard on Wheels I’ve got a breeze at my heels Tasty Jams on the box And to sweeten the deal A little stash in my sock I ask the wheel up in the sky To let me ride until I die And its giving me feels Cuz I’m a wizard on wheels

Cubic Gate 04:26
Are you weary of this place Wishing you could disappear Down the street or outer space Maybe anywhere but here All around us there are doors A million roads we can't perceive Places you would rather to go In your hands you hold the key. It’s bizarre and arcane Cross in to another plane Hurry now, don’t be late Step into the Cubic Gate Through this wondrous little box You can twist the hand of fate The great wheel at your command And the means of your escape It’s bizarre and arcane Cross in to another plane Hurry now, don’t be late Step into the Cubic Gate Do you want the seven heavens Or would you rather the abyss Any place we choose at random Can’t be any worse than this It’s bizarre and arcane Cross in to another plane Hurry now, don’t be late Step into the Cubic Gate

You may be fast You could be clever You might endure And live forever You may have wits You could have wisdom And you might rule A mighty kingdom But you will fear my approach from your ivory tower Because I’m wearing the Gauntlets of Ogre Power Arrayed in jewels And shiny armor The fools in court Think you're a charmer You may deceive You might wield magic Maybe your thoughts Are telepathic But all the thoughts in your head can't hold back the hour When you’ll be crushed by the Gauntlets of ogre power Because in matters of strength only strength will matter And I’m wearing the Gauntlets of Ogre Power Yes I’m wearing the Gauntlets of Ogre Power

ABOUT THIS PROJECT
Thanks for checking these songs out. I’m not sure if anyone is ever going to read this but I think it’s probably a good idea to write down some thoughts about this project. If nothing else, it might help me remember some key details as the years go by.
At some point in 2021 I became aware of Michael C. Hsiung’s work. Probably through John Bultena’s Instagram feed. I was immediately struck by Michael’s style. It manages to balance simplicity, depth, and humor. I started messaging Michael and we struck up a casual online friendship. This is not something usual for me. I tend to make friends the old fashioned way but my correspondence with Michael was very breezy and chill. I knew I liked this dude. The weirdest thing was, he lives about five miles away from me.
The more of Michael’s work I saw, the more I wanted to know about the world he was creating. I joked that we should come up with a Saturday morning cartoon featuring his characters. This is the type of thinking that usually kicks off a songwriting spree. I tend to write songs in batches and soon I found myself woolgathering about Michael’s wizards.
Early in 2022 I was in a bit of a lull between projects and I got the courage to reach out to him about collaborating on a zine. Being somewhat obsessed with indie TTRPGs, I knew there was a place for Michael’s art. Pretty soon the idea of Skate Wizards was born.
This was a very pure and fun collaboration. Our sensibilities compliment each other well. Little by little we came up with a background for the world, simple rules and a few basic adventures. The game development and songwriting went hand in hand.
While I was working on these tunes I discovered that Enrique Tena Padilla had his Cube studio set up not far from my house. His work for Osees and Wand is very inspirational to me. I just knew Enrique would get the vibe of what we were going for and he did not disappoint. He’s about as close as you can get to a real life wizard and he added plenty of his own magic to the music.
These six songs are one component of the Skate Wizards world but to really get the whole picture you need to check out the game and the music videos that go along with it. If you mainly know Loot the Body as “D&D music” I hope you’ll indulge this excursion into home brew. It’s probably not the last one.
